The 2022 Economics graduation ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 7th from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the Great Hall of the Student Union. We are excited to mark this important milestone with our graduates and their guests.

The ceremony will be streamed live on YouTube starting at 4:55 pm on May 7th. Access the live stream.
Our ceremony will celebrate Economics undergraduates whose degrees were awarded in Fall 2021 and Spring 2022. Graduates must have registered to participate by completing the March 2022 graduation survey. Registered graduates have been included on subsequent graduation communications from Econ staff. Students who are not sure if they have registered, or who would like to be added to a registration waitlist, should email Jonathan Cook (cookje1@email.unc.edu) with the subject line “Graduation Waitlist Request.”

Students are also invited to attend the larger University-wide Commencement ceremony that will take place in Kenan Stadium on Sunday, May 8th. This event is not ticketed and no advance registration is required. More information on this ceremony is available here.

Please understand that our event is currently at capacity and we cannot guarantee that graduates who did not register in March will be able to participate. Students who would like to be added to a registration waitlist should email Jonathan Cook (cookje1@email.unc.edu) with the subject line “Graduation Waitlist Request.” We will notify graduates on the waitlist if seats become available.

Students are also invited to attend the larger University-wide Commencement ceremony that will take place in Kenan Stadium on Sunday, May 8th. This event is not ticketed and no advance registration is required. More information on this ceremony is available here.

Each graduate may bring up to two guests to attend the ceremony in person. Additional friends and family may participate virtually by viewing the YouTube live stream of the event.
Each graduate will be issued 2 wristbands for their guests when they check in prior to the ceremony. Only graduates and those wearing wristbands will be able to enter the Great Hall.
Please note that seating is limited and the event is at capacity, so there will be no exceptions to the two tickets per graduate allocation. We recognize that this limit may feel restrictive; we sincerely wish we had more flexibility with this number. Given that we do not control what space departments are assigned for graduation events, tickets have been allocated to allow as many of our graduates as possible to participate in this event. Additional friends and family may participate virtually by viewing the YouTube live stream of the event. Thank you in advance for your understanding and kindness toward the staff members working to host the event under these constraints.
Graduates will check in with Econ staff in the lobby of the Great Hall. Check-in begins at 4:30 pm. At check-in, a staff member will give you a name card and two wristbands, which will serve as your guest tickets. Have your guests put on their wristbands, and hold onto your name card. This request is important as you will hand your name card to the reader so that your name can be called during the distribution of diplomas*.
At the ceremony, each graduate will present the name card they picked up at check-in to the reader. The name card will include a pronunciation guide for the reader, provided by the graduate in this survey. Graduates should complete the name survey by Friday, April 29th.
The ceremony will begin at 5:00 pm. Graduates should check in at the table in the lobby no earlier than 4:30 pm.
The ceremony will consist of remarks by faculty and students as well as the distribution of diplomas.* During the distribution of diplomas, graduates will stand one row at a time and file around the back of the room and up onto the stage. Once on stage, you will hand your card to the reader, who will announce your name as per your indication in this survey. You will then walk across the stage and receive your diploma from Economics Chair Professor Donna Gilleskie. At that time, your guests will be welcome to move to the center aisle for a photo. Upon conclusion of the ceremony, you and your guests are invited to stay for light refreshments until 7:00 pm.
The Economics ceremony will be held in the Great Hall of Frank Porter Graham Student Union (Carolina Union).
