Dr. Rita Balaban, along with a group of students from the UNC Economics department, completed a 6-week immersive experience in Croatia, from May 14-June 20, 2018. The study abroad trip gave the students an opportunity to integrate into the culture and learn about Croatia’s rich history. Along with courses taught by Dr. Balaban, the students took classes with Croatian professors, where they learned about the country’s transition from socialism to full involvement in the EU. “Croatia is 1 of 2 study abroad programs based in Central Europe with the UNC Economics Department. The least amount of Economic study abroad programs, but most affordable are based in Central Europe and South Africa. The most popular program destinations are in Western Europe, Asia and New Zealand,” says Dr. Balaban. She wanted to give students a different experience, and a chance to see Croatia in all of its beauty. The group was also in Croatia when the Croatian national soccer team played the finals in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The next study abroad trip to Croatia will be May 15 – June 20, 2019. Application deadline is February 10, 2019.
