We’d like to honor our dear colleague Tiago Pires and celebrate his legacy with the creation of The Tiago Pires Graduate Student Research Award. While at UNC as an assistant professor, Tiago was a model teacher, researcher, colleague, advisor, and mentor. His unexpected death in 2016 was deeply felt throughout our community because of all the ways he made our department a better place.

Honoring Tiago:

The Tiago Pires Graduate Student Research Award Fund will support an annual conference and student paper award. The conference will be dedicated to students completing their third year of the economics PhD program, so they can present their third-year research paper to an audience of faculty and PhD students at UNC. Each paper will be matched with a discussant drawn from our older cohorts of PhD students. The Tiago Pires Graduate Student Research Award will be provided to the student who authored the best research paper in their third year, as selected by a faculty committee representing all fields in economics. This monetary award will allow the student to further their research via, for example, acquisition of data, travel to a conference to present their work, or assistance while on the job market.

How You Can Help:

An endowment of $50,000 will ensure that this conference and award become an enduring recognition of Tiago’s contributions to our department. The annual conference expenses will be modest, providing for lunch and refreshments. We will select one graduate student for the award, providing a stipend for future research expenses. While reaching the $50,000 goal will allow us to host a conference and make one award to a student each year, surpassing the goal will help sustain the award’s value in the future and/or allow for multiple concurrent awards or expanded coverage for students’ research expenses.
